Coral Reefs Information
Coral Reefs
Coral reefs are living, underwater gardens that form the backbone of underwater life in some areas of the world. They are made of coral skeletons and even though they look stagnant, they are actually very much alive. This means that when you dive or snorkel underwater to take a look at these coral reefs, you need to be careful not to disturb anything. They are very slow at growing and at the rate that they are getting disturbed, they don’t grow back as quickly. This means that coral reefs are actually in danger of being depleted.
Because they are so sensitive, this dictates where they will grow. They like tropical regions where the water is warm. They also can’t tolerate an area that has a lot of waves. Since they are delicate, they’ve learned that even a hit from a wave can cause harm to it. So they simply don’t grow in these situations. Unfortunately, this means that these are conditions that people find desirable for diving and snorkeling. Damage to the coral reefs from these activities is very possible.
Coral reefs grow all over the world. Basically wherever the climate is warm and there aren’t a lot of waves there is a very good chance that you will find them. However, a lot of people don’t realize how delicate they really are. There is a lot of activity in the water nowadays. Not only that, but humans have indirectly caused harm to them from their actions. Things like pollution can have a devastating affect on coral reefs.
If you are interested in coral reefs it is helpful to learn about them. By understanding their biology and how they work, it can help you have a greater appreciation for them. Without knowledge it is easy to abuse them. If you don’t know how your actions hurt them, you could cause serious damage. This is especially important if you tend to do a lot of scuba diving or snorkeling. In general, just don’t touch them or do sudden movements near them. They are beautiful to look at but if you hurt they won’t be there any longer. You can find more information about that online or in books about coral reefs.
